Jay Electronica

To tell this story I need to flashback a little bit. It was the end of 2008 and I was wrapping up fall semester of junior year at Indiana State. I was looking for new music to add to the college station I worked for and came across this song called “Exhibit C” by Jay Electronica. I looked at the credits for the song and saw that it was produced by Just Blaze so that instantly made me press play. It was about 45 seconds later and I knew the song was a smash. I had to have more music from this guy and fast.

“Exhibit C”

Let’s come back to present day. It’s 2013 and the only music we have from Jay Elect is a song with Jay-Z and The-Dream from 2010, a song with Mobb Deep (mediocre at best) in 2011 and nothing else. I’m not even sure he hit a recording booth last year. It’s surprising how many fans this guy still has without releasing a full project in years. His album, Act II , is “supposedly” finished as we were shown what seemed to be a tracklist last year. He is signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation imprint and we ALL know that Jay is an awful executive. He shelved more acts at Def Jam than Home Depot has to offer so this is probably a factor as well.

We live in the age where you can go record new music and just release it to the masses if you have a Mediafire account or even an Audio Mack account. If artists on Twitter can put out music in a faster manner than Jay Electronica then there is something wrong. Curren$y puts out about four projects a year. Four PROJECTS a year; last year alone he dropped an EP with Harry Fraud, his Warner Bros. debut The Stonned Immaculate, and a mixtape at the end of the year, plus one this year already. I’ve rapped more bars on Twitter than we’ve got from Jay Electronica in the past 18 months.

Ghost Of Christopher Wallace

The sad part about all of this is that we all KNOW what Jay Electronica is capable of doing with music. He could be the best to ever rap but instead he’s laid up with some heiress in England just chilling. I’ve always compared Jay to that one kid you knew growing up who was the best basketball player you’ve ever seen. He’s your Michael Jordan on the playground but the guy slacks off so much in school he’s forced to go hoop at junior college until he can get his grades up and go play Division I.

The question also remains: do people care enough to even listen? It’s almost like a new age Detox; we keep hearing about it but we don’t see any signs of it coming out anytime soon. If you keep teasing a dog with a treat they will eventually ignore you and walk away. This is essentially what Jay Electronica has been doing to fans for years. If you keep alienating your fanbase like that then they’re bound to flock to other people and never give your new music a spin.

Personally I just want proof that the man is still alive. Is his music even real? Maybe this is Inception.
