The Introduction

I’m fresh out of the theater, wiping away tears of joy at the awesome that was Fast 6. Since the very first Fast & Furious film I’ve been a diehard fan and its been difficult containing my excitement for each installment. Though not everyone is a fan of the 2nd (hated it) and 3rd (loved it except for Bow Wow), the characters introduced in those have become mainstays in the series.

The fourth film started a strong story-driven trend which carried over into Fast Five. The cliffhanger ending of that movie blew audiences away, hinting at the return of character thought dead for nearly two movies. All this brings us to Fast 6.

Justin Lin, who gained the director’s chair and has kept it since Tokyo Drift, has steadily ramped up the intensity. The trailer for this one hinted that things could have gone a bit overboard though. Check the final word below!

  • Rating | PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action and mayhem throughout, some sexuality and language and friggin tank. A TANK. You CAN’T BRING A TANK TO A STREET RACE, BRO. ITS NOT FAIR.

“Star Trek: Into Darkness” | Movie Review

The Introduction

I wasn’t around to pen the review for J.J. Abrams first journey into the stars, but I was definitely impressed. I grew up watching Next Generation with Profex Sr. and hearing stories about the original from my uncle, but never considered myself a Trekky. Any “space journey” fiction intrigued me as a kid (hence my love for Ender’s Game) and the Star Trek lore always intrigued me, just never as much as Star Wars.

The rekindling of the franchise in 2009 was an opportunity for a fresh start. These modern takes were made for people much like myself: Curious, but not entirely informed. Most times, as a fanboy, I condemn the liberties taken when writers get a hold of these stories that we hold near and dear. It took a different perspective for me to truly understand, though.

Its definitely true that some writers get a little wild with additions/subtractions to existing material, but I think the Trek movie got it write. With Into Darkness bringing one of the most infamous Trek villains to the screen, will the energy built by the first film carry over, progress, or fizzle out?

The Introduction

Its always trouble when you’re bringing a true classic from one medium to another. Expectations and emotions will be high, fans chomping at the bit for any blemishes. Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet), known for his grandiose directing, was tasked with bringing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s infamous novel to the silver screen. With Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained, Inception) in the leading role, does it live up to the hype? Of course not, but its their own fault.

The Introduction…With A Twist

Well….to start, I accepted screening passes to 42 without actually expecting to be able to attend. I worked the same day and I’d be cutting it close. I arrived with minutes to spare and was greeted by a clerk running out with his umbrella to walk me to the theater and….this:

Imagine my surprise. I walked into the venue via the red carpet and found myself amidst a crowd that was slowly getting larger. I felt awkward because everyone was facing in my direction as I stood next to an older gentleman in a “42″ hat while taking my surroundings in (I later learned that I was standing in the middle of a photo op with the Mayor. Woops).

After wandering aimlessly and painfully under-dressed for the event, I eventually made my way into the very top row of a packed theater. I prepared myself for a potential feel good sports flick with an emotional and tense journey a la Remember The Titans. Did it live up to the hype?

  • Rating | PG-13 for thematic elements. Namely the word “ni**er” being used enough to make Django flip out

There’s no experience like stepping completely out of your comfort zone. On March 13th this year, that’s exactly what I did. I hopped in a rental with K1ng Eljay and Yori and hit the 14-hour road to Austin, TX for the incredible festival that is South x Southwest. You’ve read recounts from a couple people about the festival itself but here I chronicle the long journey to and from.
